Axial's Randall Davis's Full-Size Jeep

Randall Davis's Full-size Jeep

By Matt Higgins

At Axial, adventure is in our DNA. This isn’t just a 9 to 5 thing. Case in point: check out Randall Davis’s 2007 Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited Rubicon. During the day, Randall is a product developer working on such as projects as the Axial UTB18 Capra and the SCX10 III Early Bronco, but on weekends he's often hitting the trail in his full-size machine. This Jeep is no mall crawler. Read on and see how Randall prepped his Jeep to be a serious trail rig.

Randall started with a slightly modified 2007 JK Rubicon. With bigger tires, taller suspension, and lockers, he could have left well enough alone, but in the same way a base model wasn’t good enough, his factory well-equipped ride wasn’t satisfactory. One modification led to the next.

Needing maximized articulation that a short arm setup couldn’t provide, for suspension, the Jeep is outfitted with a long-arm kit from Rock Krawler Suspension. For shocks, he went with Radflo Bypass shocks.

While the Rubicon package comes with upgraded axles, Randall went bigger. To be able to tackle the toughest trails he can find, Currie Rock Jock 44 axles were installed. These robust purpose-built axles mean Randall has no issues turning his 37-inch BFGoodrich KM3 tires, which are wrapped around Hutchinson Rock Monster internal bead lock wheels.

Other modifications include: JE Reel Drivelines, CTM U-Joints, ring and pinion gear by Motive Gears, Warn ZEON 10-S Winch with Factor 55 recovery gear, Rigid Industries LED lights, sPOD switches, PSC Cylinder Assist, Synergy Mfg Steering links, Poison Spyder body armor, and Magnaflow mufflers. He states he really focused on building the Jeep to have a strong drivetrain with the Dana 44-sized axles.

Randall and his Jeep have conquered some famous trails such as the Rubicon Trail, Top of the World in Moab, The Hammers trails in Johnson Valley, all of the trails in Big Bear, The Dutchmen and many others in Sand Hollow, Utah. Randall isn’t just a weekend warrior. As a racer, he ran in the 2016 King of the Hammers (KOH) in a race Jeep with Desert Turtle Racing. In fact, he’s run KOH for four years and has competed in professional rock crawling for more than five years. Randall’s experience allows him to bring real world rock crawling and performance ideas to the table when Monday rolls around and he has to take his race helmet off and put on his Axial Adventure product developer hat.

What’s next for Randall and his Jeep? The only weak link left – the transfer case. Randall has an eye on an Atlas II conversion but knows it’s not an easy process.
