Flashback: Axial AX10 Scorpion XC-1
By Matt Higgins
Released in 2007, the Axial AX10 can easily be called the one crawler that forever changed RC crawling. Previous to the AX10, enthusiasts had to piece together components from multiple kits and multiple vendors to make an RC crawler. It was fun and there was certainly a lot of creativity, but not everyone wanted to or would go this route. As a result, crawling was a segment that showed great promise, was getting a lot of attention, and yet still stayed relatively small. Then came the AX10 Scorpion.
The AX10 was the first purpose-built rock crawler that delivered great looks, high performance, and durability. The AX10 made it easy for consumers and hobby shops to give rock crawling a shot. And people did — lots of them. The segment exploded and continues to be one of the best-selling segments in all of RC.
The AX10 featured a side plate chassis design and a linked suspension with substantial articulation. It was a solid performer. There were many variations of the AX10, but one of most popular was the AX10 Scorpion XC-1, which featured the unique XC-1 body and Axial's Rock Lizards tires wrapped around Axial's Rockster beadlock wheels.
The AX10 wasn't the only time Axial changed rock crawling in a big way. The AX10 was later followed by the SCX10 that forever changed scale RC rock crawling.
