Axial Pro Tip
Drive Pin Retention
By Matt Higgins
Losing a tiny drive pin can be frustrating, but it could also end your day if you're out crawling. Many Axial rigs have drive pins that thread into the wheel hex or are retained by a separate set screw, but some have smooth drive pins that get captured when the hex presses over them. This latter design is the standard in RC and works perfectly well. The only tricky part is the pin can fall out as soon as the hex is removed. This typically isn't an issue on the bench but can lead to an easily lost drive pin in the field doing repairs. The fix is to apply a tiny amount of silicone glue to the drive pin before inserting it in the axle. The key is to use a minimal amount. You don't want to get any on the bearing or create a glob that will rub and cause friction. The pin will still be easily removable and the glue can be peeled off if needed.

Don't know what glue to use? The go-to glue in RC is Shoe Goo.
