How to LCXU Lower Gearing

Axial Pro Tip

Base Camp Low Range

By Matt Higgins

The LCXU transmission used in the SCX10 III Base Camp RTR and Base Camp Builder's Kit is designed, via an internal gear swap, to work with both standard and portal axles. One of the changes achieved is reversing the output direction. Because portals such as the AR45P axles have two gears in each portal box, the output shafts' rotation is reversed compared to a standard axle. The LCXU internal gears can be swapped to accommodate this.

When the internal gears are configured for standard gears, the gearing is also lowered. The gears in the portal boxes provide lower gearing. When the LCXU transmission is configured for standard axles, the gearing is also lowered to better match the final drive ratio achieved with portals.

You can take advantage of this lower gearing option even if you have portal axles. If you run portals, want lower gearings for more torque, and have a motor that can be reversed, you can install the optional gearing configuration.

Currently, the SCX10 III Base Camp RTR (AXI03027) version includes portals and the Base Camp Builder's Kit (AXI03011) is outfitted with standard axles. To reconfigure either setup, you will need the and Transmission Metal Gear Set: LCXU. And, if you do decide to run the standard axle configuration in your portal axle-equipped rig, reverse the motor. To do that properly, use a programmer such as the Spektrum ESC Programmer V2. Do not use the channel reverse feature on the transmitter.
